Being a fan of light gun games, I was interested in what Konami had to offer in the early 2000s. Namco's Time Crisis II was still making profits in the arcades a few years after its release. Konami having pioneered the Bemani series (not to mention reeling off their success with Dance Dance Revolution - All that was ever really offered in the UK mainstream was Dancing Stage EuroMix) attempted to design arcade games with features that couldn't be replicated at home so easily.
1999 brought Silent Scope. A unique idea where you played as a sniper having to pick off terrorists. Unlike most gun games, you had to take down enemies from a long distance without attracting attention. The gun itself operated as a yaw controller with a LCD screen in the scope to replicate firing a PSG-1 sniper rifle.
The game was so successful, it spawned two sequels and got ported to the Dreamcast, PS2 and the Xbox. The standard control pad in these home ports was awkward and couldn't capture the feeling of using the rifle controller in the arcade version. The Dreamcast's Mouse made things a lot easier. The PS2 ports were all compatible with a USB mouse (again, a better way to play the game) and the Xbox had a third party sniper rifle controller which worked but in the days where CRT TVs were the norm, you had to turn the brightness up to ridiculous levels to move the cursor smoothly. It might have been more practical if an IR sensor was used like the Guncon 3 for the PS3 or the Wii Remote. Maybe Konami would have got better results porting their physical arcade games to the succeeding generation of consoles (PS3, Wii etc.)
There's a few things to say on the PS2 port of Police 24/7 but I feel I haven't fully explored the quality of the port. In the meantime, I will share this: A list of compatible webcams for the game.
Back in 2002, I was interested so much in the port that I sent an email to Konami Europe asking about webcam compatibility. The cam that came packaged with the Japanese version was not included but the manual still mentioned the use of it. They kindly replied to me with a list. I ended up tracking one down on eBay around the time (as well as a Hyperblaster. I had a third party gun - the "Predator 2" that wouldn't work despite it offering compatibility with Konami light gun games)
Chances are these webcams will be extremely hard to find over ten years later (not to mention out of date!). However, to help contribute information, I will show a list of what webcams have been reported to work with P24/7 by Konami Europe themselves.
I have also included a screenshot of the email which has the complete information.
